WNBA’s Latest Proposal Signals a Lengthy Road Ahead for New CBA Negotiations

The WNBA initially highlighted the positive features of its collective bargaining agreement (CBA) proposal sent to the WNBPA before a 30-day negotiation deadline, but more restrictive contract details are now surfacing. According to early reports, the top player salary before bonuses is capped at $1 million, the average salary stands at $500,000, the minimum salary exceeds $250,000, and the salary cap for 2026 is set at $5 million. These financial terms come alongside an earlier training camp start and the removal of team-provided housing, as noted by Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports.

Training camp could begin as soon as mid-March, which conflicts with the NCAA Tournament, complicating the WNBA draft process and rookie integration. This earlier start also seems aimed at competing with popular offseason leagues such as Unrivaled, Project B, and EuroLeague Women, with the timing leaving players little rest between commitments. Notably, Project B’s season would overlap into April, as would the EuroLeague Women’s playoffs. Under the new CBA’s priority rules, players must attend the start of training camp or face suspension, putting many, including key stars, in a difficult position. While the WNBA is proposing fair pay, it requires players’ full commitment to the league, a move one source described as “illogical” regarding the early camp schedule.

The end of team housing will limit financial gains for players on minimum or short-term contracts, adding to their burdens. Foss explained that currently, players have multiple housing options during the season and playoffs, including team housing or monthly stipends varying by city, with additional provisions for players with young children. Housing reductions could also impact players’ offseason living conditions, as the current CBA obliges the league to secure employment opportunities during the offseason that often provide housing benefits. Players with league marketing contracts also receive offseason housing aid.

While negotiating a new CBA naturally involves some give-and-take, these proposed restrictions seem more like minor impositions rather than genuine compromises. Instead of fostering player opportunities in other leagues, the WNBA appears to be asserting exclusivity and tightening control over its athletes. The negotiation process looks set to extend well beyond the current short 40-day period.

Fan Take: This negotiation is crucial for WNBA fans because it highlights the tension between fair player compensation and restrictive league demands. How this deal unfolds could significantly impact player movement, offseason opportunities, and ultimately the growth and visibility of women’s basketball.
