Auctioneer John O’Kelly described Porta Fortuna as “nearly perfect in every way” when he presented her to a full house at the Tattersalls sales ring. This four-time Royal Ascot and Grade 1 champion met high expectations by selling for 4.5 million guineas (approximately $6.3 million) to MV Magnier, marking one of the highest prices for a trained mare globally this year.
Bred by TaylorMade Sales Agency and trained by Donnacha O’Brien, Porta Fortuna raced for Medallion Racing, Steve Weston, Dean Reeves, and Barry Fowler. She stood out among her peers with victories including the G3 Albany Stakes and the G1 Cheveley Park Stakes as a two-year-old, and notably won a rare treble of G1 titles in the Coronation Stakes, Falmouth Stakes, and Matron Stakes.
MV Magnier praised her talent and quality, expressing hope to breed similarly exceptional mares, with a strong possibility of sending her to Star-Spangled Banner for breeding. Phillip Shelton, Medallion Racing’s manager, emotionally reflected on the incredible journey Porta Fortuna brought to their partnership, describing her as a remarkable and gracious competitor with a spirited presence that fueled her success on the track.
Shelton noted the bittersweet nature of this moment, acknowledging that while this chapter has closed, Porta Fortuna is going to a wonderful new home and will continue to shine. He highlighted the immense financial progress the team has made and their gratitude for the incredible experiences horses like her provide.
Porta Fortuna is by Caravaggio, a talented son of Scat Daddy, and is a younger sister to Numerian, a multiple G1-placed G2 winner. She descends from the prestigious Aga Khan family, which includes European champion Milan, the Yorkshire Oaks winner Key Change, and the dual Derby winner Kahyasi.
Fan Take: This sale highlights the immense value and excitement top-class mares bring to the breeding and racing industry. Porta Fortuna’s remarkable racing record and esteemed lineage suggest she will significantly impact the future of Thoroughbred racing, making this a pivotal moment for racing enthusiasts.
