Gerald Bennett, a seasoned thoroughbred trainer, closely monitors the condition and race schedules of the 48 horses housed in his barn at Tampa Bay Downs. His genuine enthusiasm for each horse remains fresh, much like a newcomer to the profession. Bennett appreciates the dedicated staff who maintain a clean and welcoming stable environment. As the 2025-26 racing season kicks off, Bennett has quickly risen to the top of the trainer rankings, boasting four wins and four second-place finishes from 16 starters, earning him the title of Martin’s Italian Trainer of the Month.

The 81-year-old trainer from Spring Hill, Nova Scotia, credits his longtime assistant Juan Cacho Castro and the stable team for their collective efforts. Bennett emphasizes the importance of constant vigilance since setbacks are part of working with horses. Recently, Bennett celebrated victories with 4-year-old Florida geldings El Principito and Life is Precious, who finished first and second in a six-furlong sprint. Both horses are owned by Bennett’s Winning Stables, partnered with Todd R. Bittiger. Another notable win came from Secret Empire, a 4-year-old Florida gelding owned by Winning Stables, who secured a six-furlong allowance race on November 19.

Bennett explains that his horses have been given ample rest and are well-prepped for competition. El Principito had been gelded after his last race and has shown strong training progress. Several other horses are nearing race readiness, including the promising 3-year-old Naughty Rascal, who is recovering well after surgery and an infection. Naughty Rascal last raced in March and aims to make a strong comeback soon.

Bennett has an impressive record at Oldsmar and Gulfstream, amassing nine training titles at Tampa Bay Downs, tying the track record. Despite battling significant health challenges, including surgeries and chemotherapy for cancer, Bennett remains focused and positive. Supported by his wife Mary and his team, he continues to prioritize his horses’ welfare and training.

In his 50th year in North American Thoroughbred racing, Bennett feels blessed and optimistic about the future. He expresses deep gratitude for medical care and strength from his faith, which drives his resilience and commitment to the sport.

Fan Take: Gerald Bennett’s story is a powerful testament to dedication and resilience in horse racing, inspiring fans and professionals alike. His ability to maintain excellence despite personal challenges highlights the passion and care behind the sport, promising exciting prospects for the upcoming season.
