Henderson Zeroes In on Rulamba’s Path to Cheltenham Glory

Lulamba is set for one more race before the Arkle, heading to Newbury in February to compete in either the Game Spirit Chase or Warwick’s Kingmaker Novices Chase. On the same day, preparations will continue for the exciting Cheltenham Festival of Chasers.

Jockey Nicky Henderson’s Grade 1-winning hurdler recently secured his first major victory over fences and is aiming to make his debut at Exeter Pursuit, adding to his triumph in the Henry VIII Novice Chase at Sandown last Saturday.

Henderson mentioned that ideally, Lulamba would race twice more for added experience ahead of the prestigious March event at Prestbury Park. However, since he plans to skip the Christmas Wayward Lad Novice Chase at Kempton, Lulamba will likely follow the familiar path to the Arkle.

Seven Burrows’ team has previously used Newbury as a stepping stone for festival contenders such as Splinter Sacre and Altior, while Warwick hosted Jonbon in 2023.

“He won’t run twice there because the races aren’t spaced out enough, and he can’t see the competition clearly,” Henderson explained. “The Game Spirit and Kingmakers fall on the same weekend, and since I’m skipping Kempton for Christmas, Lulamba doesn’t need another race so soon after Exeter. There are only three weeks left, and I want to finish his prep in one go, with at least three runs before the Arkle.”

Fan Take: This update is significant for horse racing enthusiasts as it outlines a carefully planned route for a promising contender in one of the sport’s premier events. Lulamba’s strategic campaign highlights the skillful management behind top-level racing, building anticipation for a thrilling Cheltenham Festival.
