Jamie Carragher is always looking for an opportunity to try out Mohamed Salah and the Liverpool star served it to him on a silver platter with commentary on Saturday.
Just two weeks ago, Carragher attacked Salah for not leaving the pitch during Liverpool’s poor period, accusing him of only speaking to the media about himself.
Ironically, Salah surprised everyone with a shocking interview after the draw against Leeds United and proved himself right.
The Egyptian star was left on the bench for the third consecutive game by manager Arne Slott and the Dutchman did not even bring him on as a substitute, even though Liverpool needed a goal to win.
In a fiery interview, Salah accused the club of throwing him under the bus and making him a scapegoat through no fault of his own.
He also publicly admitted that his relationship with Slott had broken down in recent weeks for reasons beyond his understanding, and hinted that the club may be trying to get rid of him.
His interview sent Liverpool into a panic and a secret meeting was held on Sunday in which the club decided to remove Salah from the squad for the team’s important Champions League trip to Italy to face Inter Milan.
Salah also dropped Jamie Carragher’s name in the interview, saying he was aware Carragher would talk about him on Sky Sports.
And Carragher did just that, launching yet another scathing attack on the Liverpool legend.
Jamie Carragher launches scathing attack on Mohamed Salah
Carragher said Salah’s rare mixed-zone appearance was “orchestrated” by his agent, claiming the Egyptian had deliberately waited after Liverpool’s late defeat to Leeds to “get a manager” at the club’s most vulnerable moment.
The former Liverpool defender did not hesitate to brand Salah’s timing as “disgraceful” and even accused him of trying to get Arne Slott sacked.
Carragher insisted this was not the first time, recalling a similar incident last season in which Salah publicly put pressure on the owner in a moment of “maximum leverage”.
He claimed that despite Salah’s legendary status, forwards too often put themselves ahead of their team.
Carragher said Salah had long enjoyed the perks of being a superstar, such as not playing at the back or in defence, but he warned that elite players like him also needed to be aware when their egos were hurt.
Carragher reminded that before joining Liverpool he was “known as the guy who failed at Chelsea” and that despite being Egypt’s greatest player, he had never won an AFCON. As proof, Carragher said even world-class talent relies on teammates, managers and fans.
The Sky Sports pundit insisted he had never criticized Salah’s performances on the pitch, describing him as “one of the greatest players to have ever played for Liverpool”, but said he would call him out “when he throws the club under the bus and throws it off the pitch”.
Carragher also stressed the logic of some of Arn Slott’s recent decisions, particularly leaving Salah out in defensively vulnerable games, and pointed to moments this season where Salah has failed to instill confidence in new team-mates such as Florian Wirtz or missed opportunities.
Following his comments, he backed the club’s position on Salah, admitting he did not know whether the Egyptian would play for Liverpool again, but concluded by warning: “Who cares” if Salah continues down this path.
Mr Carragher’s comments may have gone too far.
Fans may feel that some of the comments Carragher has made about Salah are extremely over-the-top and provide further support to previous claims that the former Liverpool legend may be having personal issues with the Egyptian king.
Let’s not forget that this is a player who has scored 250 goals in 420 games for the club and assisted a further 116 goals. That’s an incredible number.
It would be foolish to suggest that Salah, who has created the fourth-most chances in the league this season than any other Liverpool player, would not help his team-mates.
Carragher’s rant seemed more like an opportunity to challenge Liverpool’s star player, but he did so without thinking twice.
