Clippers Coach Ty Lue Sets the Record Straight on Communication with Chris Paul

The Los Angeles Clippers have significantly underperformed so far this season, holding a dismal 6-18 record and ranking 23rd in net rating. Their struggles were highlighted when the team announced the surprising decision to part ways with franchise legend and soon-to-be Hall of Famer Chris Paul. This move shocked many, especially since Paul had openly criticized the team’s poor start. The decision came abruptly while the Clippers were preparing for an away game against the Atlanta Hawks. Reports suggested a communication breakdown between Paul and Clippers coach Ty Lue, which Lue later denied, stating they maintained contact even when Paul was not playing regularly.

Former Clippers star Blake Griffin revealed that neither Lue nor team owner Steve Ballmer has reached out to Paul since the split, a fact Lue confirmed. Lue also clarified that he was not involved in the decision to let Paul go, deferring to Clippers president Lawrence Frank for that explanation. According to Jake Fisher, the Clippers now aim to work with Paul to facilitate a trade to a team of his choosing. Although Paul announced plans to retire at the end of this season, it is believed he intends to finish his career with a different team, which is a disappointing turn given his original intention to retire with the Clippers—a team where he found much success and leadership roles.

Paul’s future remains uncertain as he looks for a team where he can contribute meaningfully, something he failed to achieve with the Clippers this season. Despite his history as a starter last season with the San Antonio Spurs, his minutes and impact have dwindled. There is potential for Paul to provide veteran leadership to a young team, though his style did not mesh well with the Clippers’ superstar duo of Kawhi Leonard and James Harden. Over the summer, Paul drew interest from teams like the Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Phoenix Suns, with the Mavericks being a likely candidate where he could mentor emerging talents.

For now, the Clippers are in limbo, unable to move Paul until December 15. Since the announcement of his removal, the team has only won one of three games, suggesting the decision has not improved their fortunes.

Fan Take: This development is crucial for basketball fans because it marks the end of an era for Chris Paul with the Clippers, highlighting the challenges even legendary players face when a team struggles. It also signals potential shifts in team dynamics and player movements that could reshape the NBA landscape as Paul seeks a meaningful final chapter in his storied career.
