Red Bull has officially announced that Helmut Marko will be stepping down from the team ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Marko has been a pivotal figure at Red Bull since the acquisition of Jaguar in 2005.
As the leader of Red Bull’s junior driver program, Marko played a crucial role in the development of Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, both of whom secured four world championships each during their time with Red Bull. Other notable drivers like Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, and Pierre Gasly also advanced to win races in F1 after graduating from the Red Bull junior ranks.
Speculation about Marko’s departure started following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, hinting that it might be his final race with the team. In a statement released by Red Bull, Marko reflected, “I have been involved in motorsport for 60 years, but the last 20-plus years with Red Bull have been an extraordinary and incredibly successful journey. It has been a privilege to work alongside so many talented individuals, and I am immensely proud of everything we have accomplished together.”
He added, “Coming so close to missing out on the World Championships this season affected me deeply and made it clear that now is the right moment to close this long, intense, and successful chapter. I wish the team all the best going forward, and I am confident they will continue to compete fiercely for both World Championship titles next year.”
Marko’s exit comes amid other significant changes at Red Bull, with Laurent Mekies taking over as team principal earlier this year, and key figures like Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley also departing. Meanwhile, Verstappen has renewed his commitment to Red Bull but remains linked to potential moves to Mercedes and Aston Martin.
Reflecting on Marko’s departure, Mekies said, “It’s very sad news. Helmut has been a vital part of our team and the broader Red Bull racing program for over two decades. His leaving marks the close of an extraordinary chapter, and he will be greatly missed. I want to sincerely thank him for his unwavering support, not just recently but also during my early days at Scuderia Toro Rosso.”
Mekies also noted, “Helmut, alongside CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, was instrumental in bringing me back to the Red Bull family, first at Faenza and this summer in Milton Keynes. Helmut is a true racer at heart, always pushing us to the edge and ready to take risks in pursuit of our ambitions.”
Fan Take: Helmut Marko’s departure signals a major shift in Red Bull’s leadership, which could impact the team’s future strategies and driver development pipeline. For racing fans, this change raises intriguing questions about the direction of one of F1’s most dominant teams and how it might reshape the sport’s competitive landscape moving forward.
