Marc Márquez expressed deep gratitude to his family, friends, and team for helping him avoid making a rash decision during the difficult final period of his time with Honda. He described this phase as “dark,” where he felt trapped and even considered quitting. Their support, however, encouraged him to trust his instincts and make a bold move by leaving Honda, the only MotoGP team he had raced for, to join Gresini and ride a year-old Ducati in 2024.

This move marked a turning point in Márquez’s career, as he went on to win his ninth world championship in his first season with Ducati’s factory Lenovo Team. Speaking at the Estrella Galicia event, Márquez reflected on how important it is to recognize the people around you, especially during tough times. While his early years of success from 2010 to 2020 were filled with joy, the challenges that followed, including a broken arm in 2020, an eye injury, and Honda’s declining performance, led to a dark period in his career.

Márquez emphasized how invaluable the support from his inner circle was during this slump, helping him avoid making impulsive decisions and motivating him to persevere. Leaving Honda after 11 seasons was a difficult yet necessary decision, especially since only his mechanic Javier Ortiz followed him to Gresini in a high-risk move. Márquez admitted it was either take this leap or end his racing career. The decision to join a family-run team like Gresini and race on a bike that wasn’t brand new gave him the drive to reclaim his World Championship.

In 2024, Márquez brought an end to a 1,043-day MotoGP winless streak by claiming victory at Aragon while with Gresini. He finished his satellite year third in the World Championship with two wins and then dominated the 2025 season with Ducati’s factory team, winning 14 consecutive races and clinching the title at Motegi. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury caused by a collision at Mandalica, followed by surgery, forced him to miss the last four races of the season. Still, he is expected to return for the 2026 preseason testing in Sepang in early February.

Fan Take: Márquez’s comeback story is a testament to resilience and the critical role of a strong support network in high-stakes motorsport. His transition from Honda to Ducati not only revitalized his career but also injected fresh excitement and competition into MotoGP, promising thrilling seasons ahead for fans worldwide.
