Knicks and Jalen Brunson Send a Strong Message to the East Ahead of NBA Cup Semifinals

The New York Knicks, who made it to the Eastern Conference Finals last season and boast a top-10 player in Jalen Brunson, underwent major changes by replacing coach Tom Thibodeau with Mike Brown and bolstering their bench with experienced veterans. Despite playing in the largest market and entering the season with strong championship odds, they initially seemed overlooked among their Eastern Division rivals.

Early in the season, the spotlight was on the Chicago Bulls for their flawless start, Miami Heat’s innovative offense, and the surprising success and struggles of teams like the Cavaliers, Magic, Celtics, Pistons, and Bucks. The Knicks, meanwhile, had a slow start at 2-3 and struggled particularly on the road, sitting just slightly above .500 by late November.

However, the team has made significant strides lately, winning eight of their last nine games with six of those victories by double digits, including a 117-101 triumph over the Toronto Raptors in the NBA Cup quarterfinals. Currently, they hold second place in the East with a 17-7 record, just two games shy of the Pistons.

Despite early struggles adapting to Brown’s new offensive system, the Knicks now possess an elite offense, ranking third league-wide with an offensive rating of 121.7, up from 117.3 last season. They are also among the top teams in three-point attempts, accuracy, turnover rate, and offensive rebounds. Brunson continues to lead, averaging nearly 28 points per game with efficient shooting, aided by increased support from his teammates.

With seven other players scoring nine or more points per game, the bench has improved significantly from last season’s league-worst reserve unit, though it remains less productive compared to others. Defensively, the Knicks are almost unchanged, ranking mid-pack, though they allow a high number of three-point attempts. The defense is managing without Mitchell Robinson and OG Anunoby, who are now back from injury.

The Knicks will face the Orlando Magic in Las Vegas for the NBA Cup semifinals, aiming to solidify their status as a team that commands attention. Guard Josh Hart emphasized the importance of focusing on each game and possession to achieve their ultimate goal, without underestimating any opponent.

Fan Take: This resurgence of the Knicks showcases how quickly a team can turn things around with strong coaching and key contributions from star players. For basketball fans, it highlights the unpredictable excitement of the NBA season and the impact of strategic adjustments on a team’s trajectory.
