Years Before His Boxing Comeback, Manny Pacquiao Emerged from Retirement to Train at MMA Fighter School

Three years ago today, Manny Pacquiao began his return to boxing. The Filipino icon had retired in 2021 after a loss to Yordenis Ugas, which dashed his hopes of regaining the WBA (super) welterweight title, seeming to mark the end of his in-ring career.

Yet now, over four years later, Pacquiao remains active in the sport and aims to compete for a world championship once again in 2026. Having been stripped of the WBC welterweight title following a draw with Mario Barrios, his comeback is expected to continue into 2026 with a planned bout against WBA welterweight champion Laurie Romero.

Despite being 46 and not having fought professionally since 2021, Pacquiao’s recent performances have amazed many. During his hiatus, the legendary fighter stayed active, including participating in exhibition matches.

Notably, on December 10, 2022, Pacquiao fought an exhibition match against South Korean fighter DK Yoo at the Korea International Exhibition Center in Goyang. Pacquiao dominated, knocking down Yoo multiple times and winning by a unanimous decision. This event reaffirmed Pacquiao’s skill and control in the ring.

Unlike many exhibition fights, Pacquiao’s match against Yoo was not about money or merely warming up for a comeback. It was a charity event, with all proceeds going toward building 80 homes in the Philippines and supporting families impacted by the Ukraine conflict.

Fan Take: This resurgence of Manny Pacquiao is exciting news for fight fans, as it showcases the enduring spirit and skill of a boxing legend. His commitment to charity also highlights how athletes can use their platform to make a meaningful difference, enriching the sport beyond just competition.
