Robert Suarez inks three-year, $45 million deal to bolster Braves bullpen

The Atlanta Braves have officially announced a three-year, $45 million deal with closer Robert Suarez. Suarez is set to earn $13 million in the upcoming season and $16 million annually for the next two years, with a pledge to donate 1% of his salary to the team’s foundation.

At 34 years old, Suarez has spent his entire four-year MLB career with the San Diego Padres. During the 2025 season, he appeared in 70 games, pitched 69.2 innings, and achieved a career-best and National League-leading 40 saves. His outstanding performance secured him a spot on the National League All-Star team for the second year in a row.

Since 2024, Suarez has recorded 76 saves, the most in MLB, outpacing Cleveland Guardians’ Emmanuel Clase by five saves. Although Suarez had two years and $16 million remaining on his contract last November, he was not offered a qualifying offer, so the Padres will not receive compensation for losing their draft pick.

Suarez’s signing bolsters the Braves’ bullpen, adding one of the top relievers available. The team recently re-signed Raisel Iglesias, who has tallied 96 saves in the last three seasons. According to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, Suarez will take on the role of setup man, while Iglesias remains the closer. Additionally, the Braves had shown interest in reliever Devin Williams before he chose to sign with the New York Mets, as reported by Yahoo Sports’ Russell Dorsey.

Fan Take: This signing is a huge boost for the Braves as they solidify one of the strongest bullpens in the league, making them even more formidable contenders. Baseball fans should watch closely—this move highlights how elite relievers are becoming pivotal game-changers in modern baseball strategy.
