The Oklahoma City Thunder dominated the Phoenix Suns with a 138-89 victory in the NBA Cup quarterfinals, tying the NBA record for the best 25-game start in a season. The reigning champions have now won 24 of their first 25 games, matching the mark set by the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, last season’s MVP, contributed 28 points at the Paycom Center, extending his streak of scoring at least 20 points to 96 consecutive games. This win marked the Thunder’s 16th straight victory, a new franchise record, and they are set to face the San Antonio Spurs in the semifinals in Las Vegas on Saturday.

“Winning is never boring,” said Thunder forward Jaylen Williams. Since the beginning of the 2024-25 season, the Thunder have claimed 92 wins out of 107 regular season games, finishing last season with a Western Conference-leading record of 68-14. The NBA’s all-time best regular season record remains 73 wins, set by the Warriors in the 2015-16 campaign.

Meanwhile, the Spurs secured their spot in the semifinals by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 132-119 at Crypto.com Arena. The NBA Cup is an annual in-season tournament with all games, except the finals, counting toward regular season standings. The Thunder were last year’s runners-up, falling to the Milwaukee Bucks in the finals.

Fan Take: This record-tying start by the Thunder signals an exciting era ahead for the team and the NBA, promising high-level competition and thrilling games. For basketball fans, it’s a chance to witness a possible new dynasty, adding fresh narratives and intensity to the sport.
