Diego Lopez Admits Overlooking ‘Crucial Factor’ Cost Him Victory Against Alexander Volkanovski

Diego Lopez is known for his ability to reverse outcomes in rematches. The Mexican featherweight contender is set for a chance at redemption against Alexander Volkanovski in the second main event of the UFC in 2026 on Paramount+. Fans expressed frustration when Lopez was granted a rematch at UFC 325 in Sydney, Australia, over undefeated fighters Lerone Murphy and Movsar Evloev, whom Volkanovski has yet to face.

Volkanovski delivered a classic performance to defeat Lopez at UFC 314 last April, initiating his second reign as the featherweight champion. Reflecting on that fight before his upcoming rematch with ‘Alexander the Great,’ Lopez believes he’s identified the crucial reasons behind his loss in Miami.

Lopez admits that forgetting to enjoy the moment was a key reason for his failure to secure the UFC title. Winning earlier this year marked many milestones for him, but he feels he lost sight of having fun. On Submission Radio, Lopez emphasized how he unintentionally sacrificed the joy of fighting during his first championship bout. He explained that the pressure and nerves of fighting five rounds for the belt for the first time overwhelmed him, causing him to forget the importance of enjoying the process. Now, he feels more relaxed, happy, and focused, having made improvements both in training and his personal life.

Meanwhile, Volkanovski seems to be nearing the end of his career, with speculation about retirement after his next fight in Australia in February. However, he still has goals to chase, including the dream of becoming the UFC lightweight champion, a feat he has yet to achieve despite two attempts. Volkanovski remains optimistic about another title shot if he defends his featherweight title successfully in 2026. He also hinted at the possibility of a monumental champion vs. champion bout following his Sydney fight.

Fan Take: This rematch highlights the dynamic nature of MMA, where mental strength and enjoyment of the sport can significantly impact performance. For fight fans, it underscores how rivalries evolve and sets the stage for thrilling, high-stakes matchups that could shape the future of the featherweight division and beyond.
