Jaroslav Chmelar secured his place with the New York Rangers thanks to his relentless effort and impressive performance in the American Hockey League with the Hartford Wolf Pack. Although no one initially expected him to play for the Rangers in the 2025-26 season, circumstances shifted quickly.

According to Mike Sullivan, the 22-year-old forward was called up by the Rangers in early November and frequently praised as the top player in the Wolf Pack during the early season. Chmelar made his NHL debut against Travis Hamonic, appearing in two games before being reassigned to the AHL. Recently recalled as a backup, he has now carved out a role on the Rangers’ fourth line.

Chmelar’s ascent to the NHL highlights that strong AHL performance can always open doors to the big leagues, regardless of initial expectations. “It’s an incredible feeling. We give our all every game, and it’s rewarding to see that effort pay off,” Chmelar said. “I try not to get caught up in the idea that someone is paying me to play; consistency is key.”

Though he hasn’t scored in his last four games, Chmelar’s physical style and surprising speed for his 6-foot-4 frame have made a noticeable impact. His approach focuses on fundamentals and playing a tough, effective game. “I felt really good playing in the NHL. My focus is on hitting, forechecking, and making the game difficult for opponents,” he shared.

Beyond his on-ice play, Chmelar brings a positive and joyful energy to the team, often seen smiling and spreading good vibes in the locker room. “He’s a fantastic kid, very likable, with great energy,” Sullivan noted.

Meanwhile, Alexis Lafreniere is also evolving under Coach Sullivan’s system, demonstrating dedication and growth that are starting to pay off. It’s inspiring to see a player drafted 144th overall working tirelessly to succeed in the NHL.

Chmelar appreciates every moment, saying, “It’s incredible. Everyone dreams of being here. After my first few games, I’m soaking in the experience — learning from how my teammates perform and think about the game. I want to grow and be like them.”

Fan Take: This story is a powerful reminder that perseverance and hard work can propel players from the AHL to the NHL, inspiring fans and aspiring athletes alike. It underscores the importance of development leagues and how dedication at every level can shape the future of hockey.
