Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama Injured but Set to Make Comeback This Saturday Against Thunder, Reports Say

Victor Wembanyama is expected to make his comeback on Saturday night in the NBA Cup semifinals against the Thunder, ending his roughly month-long absence due to a calf strain, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. This is a significant boost for the Spurs, who have managed to hold their ground without their star player and now look to gain an even stronger lineup against the dominant Thunder.

Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson hinted at Wembanyama’s potential return when speaking to the media on Wednesday. “Absolutely,” Johnson confirmed, acknowledging Wembanyama’s strong progress in practice. The team will give the final approval after practice on Friday, and if all goes smoothly, Wembanyama will be back on the court Saturday. He was eager to play in Wednesday’s quarterfinal against the Lakers but both he and the Spurs decided more recovery was needed before Saturday’s game.

Wembanyama injured his calf on November 14th, a potentially devastating blow for the Spurs. However, San Antonio rallied to a 9-3 record in his absence and currently sits fifth in the Western Conference. Before his injury, Wembanyama was performing at an MVP level, averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4 assists, 3.6 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game in the first 12 games. He was seen as an early favorite for MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, but missing 12 games has put his chances for those awards and All-NBA honors at risk due to the league’s 65-game minimum rule. He can only miss five more games this season to stay eligible, which may be challenging given the remaining 58 games.

Despite these personal milestones, Wembanyama’s presence makes the Spurs a stronger contender, building on a team that has already proven it can win without him. The ongoing development of Stephon Castle and the return of De’Aaron Fox during Wembanyama’s absence have helped San Antonio stay competitive in a tough conference. His first game back against the Thunder will be a crucial test to see how close the Spurs are to challenging the reigning champions.

Fan Take: Wembanyama’s return is a huge moment for Spurs fans and basketball enthusiasts alike, as it marks the comeback of one of the league’s most exciting young talents. His presence could redefine the competitive landscape in the Western Conference and elevate the level of play in the NBA, making every game he participates in a must-watch event.
