Blues Bring Back 2023 First-Round Draft Pick from AHL Call-Up

The St. Louis Blues have once again turned to their 2023 draft picks following recent injuries, recalling Otto Stenberg from the American Hockey League’s Springfield team. Stenberg, 20, was brought up to the Blues after Dylan Holloway suffered a serious right ankle sprain and is expected to be reevaluated in six weeks. Stenberg, who was the 25th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and one of three first-round selections by the Blues, has shown promise with solid points during his play with the Thunderbirds.

Injuries have plagued the Blues in December, impacting key players such as Jimmy Snageld, Alexei Trobchenko—who recently returned after a foot burn injury—Nathan Walker, Nick Bujugstad, and Jordan Kyrou. The team is thin on forwards, relying on recent call-ups Hugh McGing and Matt Ruff, and newly signed Robbie Fabbri, a former first-round pick from 2014, who joined on a one-year, two-way contract.

With Stenberg now on the roster, the Blues will have 13 healthy forwards as they face crucial games against the Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, and Tampa Bay Lightning before the Christmas break. The squad is striving to maintain competitiveness despite the injuries, and Stenberg’s addition offers fresh energy and depth to the lineup.

Fan Take: This update is significant for hockey enthusiasts because the infusion of young talent like Stenberg during tough stretches symbolizes the resilience and depth of NHL teams. Watching these emerging players step up not only keeps the games exciting but also shapes the future of the sport with fresh skills and potential stars.
