Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has issued fresh criticism of club legend Jamie Carragher following the pundit’s controversial comments about Mohamed Salah earlier this week.

Last Monday, Carragher sparked an intense backlash after going on an eight-minute rant criticizing Salah in a fiery interview following the draw with Leeds United.

Many fans felt the criticism crossed the line, accusing the former Reds defender of pursuing personal vendettas rather than providing balanced analysis.

Among several claims, Carragher suggested that Salah routinely “threw right-backs under the bus” during his time at Anfield, suggesting the Egyptian winger failed to fight back defensively.

The comment quickly went viral, with Liverpool supporters accusing Carragher of trying to rewrite history and downplaying Salah’s immense influence on the club’s success.

Dejan Lovren, who shared the Liverpool dressing room with Mo Salah for years and remains one of his best friends, has emerged as one of the most vocal Egyptian defenders in the ongoing controversy.

The former Croatian international has repeatedly defended Salah on social media over the past week.

And on Monday, he also took a subtle stab at Carragher for his crazy comments.

Salah recently added to his Premier League record by assisting Hugo Ekitike in Liverpool’s match against Brighton.

This contribution made Salah the player with the most goals and assists for a single club in Premier League history, contributing an astonishing 277 goals for the Reds.

After Salah posted the milestone graphic on social media, Lovren reposted it to X with a sarcastic caption clearly aimed at Carragher. “It’s not enough, you need to cover your entire back.”

Friendship between Dejan Lovren and Mohamed Salah

Lovren and Salah’s bond goes far beyond their time together at Liverpool.

During their years at Anfield, the pair developed a close personal relationship, often calling each other brothers and regularly sharing moments together on and off the pitch.

Lovren has previously spoken of Salah’s humility, professionalism and relentless work ethic, often pushing back against narratives that paint the forward as selfish or unwilling to contribute defensively.

After leaving Liverpool, Lovren continued to publicly support Salah, defending him against criticism from pundits, rival fans and even former team-mates.

During the Salah contract controversy last season, the Croatian called on the club to pay Salah what he asked for because he “deserves to be paid”.

Their friendship is especially evident in difficult moments, with Lovren consistently defending Salah when he feels the Egyptian player is being unfairly targeted.

This latest tongue-in-cheek post is just one example of Lovren’s unwavering loyalty and confirms how strong their relationship remains even after their Liverpool careers no longer overlap.
