Glasgow Rangers central midfielder Joe Rothwell appears headed for an early exit from Ibrox, just months after joining on a permanent deal from Bournemouth in the summer.
According to the Daily Record, Sheffield United are confident of securing a deal for the 30-year-old midfielder when the January transfer window opens.
Chris Wilder’s side are in the process of signing the former Leeds and Southampton loanee, who has not featured for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership since October.
According to Sofascore, the experienced Flopp has started just five league games and has yet to establish himself as a regular in the midfield since the new manager took over.

If Rothwell’s move to Sheffield United goes through next month, there will be space in the squad for Danny Rolle to bring in one of his own contract players to replace him.

According to the newspaper, Gers want to sign Tromsø central midfielder Jens Herdt-Dahl in place of the experienced Englishman in the January transfer window.

Rangers Journal author and analyst Kai Watson described Geert Dahl as “one of Norway’s most talented people” and said it would be a “huge coup” for the club to bring him to Ibrox in January.
The 20-year-old star’s form at Eliteserien for the 2025 season suggests he will arrive as a significant upgrade to what Roswell have traditionally offered in the Gers’ midfield, supporting Watson’s claims that he is a big talent.
Despite only turning 20 in October, Gjeld-Dahl was a regular starter for Tromsø in the 2024 and 2025 Eliteserien seasons, and his club has considered him an important player in the first team since he was 17, which speaks volumes about what a great talent he is.
As Rolle looks to his future at Ibrox, it makes perfect sense to sign a 20-year-old starlet with a lot of upside to replace a lackluster 30-year-old player who failed to make an impact at Rangers.
Rothwell has not shown enough quality on the pitch for the Scottish giants in the Premiership this season, and this is in stark contrast to Gjeld-Dahl’s strong form at Tromsø this year.

As can be seen from the table above, the Norwegian talent’s form in 2025 suggests that Roswell will arrive as a significant upgrade to what Gers have provided on the pitch to date.
Geert-Dahl looks like he will be able to contribute more in front of goal, both as a scorer and goal creator, while also being more combative in duels, tackles and interceptions, able to win the ball back for his team.
These statistics suggest that if the £5.3m-rated star can adapt to Scottish football and change his tune from Eliteserien to the Premiership, he could significantly improve the team as Rothwell’s replacement in the short term.
Geert-Dahl, who once scored the beautiful goal in the clip above, is also 10 years younger than the 30-year-old Rothwell. That means he has much more time to grow and improve as a player.
The Norwegian star would therefore be the perfect upgrade for Rothwell. Because while he has the potential to instantly improve the Englishman with what he can offer in the second half of the season, he still has years left to get even better.
