Todd McLellan Applauds Alex DeBrincat’s Fierce Drive: ‘He Brought It’ for the Red Wings

Detroit Red Wings forward Alex DeBrincat started the season slowly but quickly found his stride after scoring his first goal in a remarkable comeback win against the St. Louis Blues on October 25. Currently, DeBrincat has tallied 18 goals in 33 games and is on track to surpass his career-best of 45 goals if he maintains his momentum. His previous high was 40 goals during his time with the Chicago Blackhawks, and he nearly matched that last season with 39 goals.

Hailing from Farmington Hills, Michigan, DeBrincat shone during Detroit’s season-high six-game road trip, netting five goals and adding four assists, helping the team earn nine out of 12 possible points. Although DeBrincat is well-known for his scoring talents, head coach Todd McLellan praises his competitive spirit as one of his standout qualities. McLellan highlighted DeBrincat’s ability to remain relentless, even when facing large defenders and playing in challenging situations.

McLellan added that they were aware of DeBrincat’s skills but were impressed by his competitiveness, shot, offensive intelligence, and overall mindset. The Red Wings recently called up forward John Leonard from the AHL, who had been Detroit’s top scorer with 19 goals in 20 games. Now in his third season with Detroit since being traded from the Ottawa Senators in July 2023, DeBrincat has become a consistent offensive force.

If Detroit wants to host Stanley Cup Playoffs at Little Caesars Arena for the first time since its opening in 2017, DeBrincat’s clutch scoring will be essential. So far, there is plenty of optimism that he will continue to provide the timely offense the team needs.

Fan Take: Alex DeBrincat’s breakout this season represents a beacon of hope for Red Wings fans craving playoff success. His ability to elevate his game under pressure not only boosts Detroit’s chances but also adds excitement to the NHL, showcasing the impact of gritty, determined forwards in today’s game.
