Former Canucks Keep Spotlight on the Ongoing Need for a Dedicated Practice Facility

The Vancouver Canucks have long faced criticism for not having a dedicated practice facility. While the Calgary Flames have finally begun constructing their own practice arena as part of a new event venue, Vancouver remains the only NHL team without a permanent practice site. Currently, the Canucks use Rogers Arena or the University of British Columbia for practices when their main venue is occupied. This issue has come up multiple times during the season, notably after former Canucks player Quinn Hughes praised the Minnesota Wild’s modern practice setup. Hughes expressed admiration for the new facility but mentioned the usual challenges of finding entrances or parking.

Former Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet had also pushed for a dedicated practice facility in Vancouver during his contract talks, though he left to coach the Philadelphia Flyers and spoke highly of their three-ice-sheet facility. Earlier plans were explored by Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford, who indicated a preference for a location within a 30-minute drive of downtown Vancouver, though political hurdles have slowed progress.

More recently, the issue resurfaced following Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s announcement of a potential new stadium and entertainment district at Hastings Park, an area that fits Rutherford’s ideal driving distance. This development has sparked speculation that the Canucks might finally establish a practice center nearby. However, the team’s future in this regard remains uncertain, meaning the players will continue using their current practice spots for the time being.
