Manchester United reportedly held talks with Roma officials recently to discuss a possible transfer for Joshua Zirkzee.
However, it appears that a deal is not necessarily close and Roma may have alternatives in mind if they are unable to sign the Dutch international.
Zirkzee hasn’t featured much first-team football for Man United in recent times, so his future is understandably in doubt, but if the latest reports are to be believed, it looks like this story could get complicated.
Latest information on Joshua Zirkzee and a possible move to Roma
According to Corriere dello Sport, United and Roma bosses recently held talks in London about signing Zirksee, but the current situation suggests he is considered too expensive for the Serie A side.
According to Football Italia’s Alfredo Pedula, Roma are also considering signing Atletico Madrid’s Giacomo Raspadori, although no deal is in sight.
It will be interesting to see what this means for the Red Devils, but they definitely need to lower their demands on Zirksee and focus on getting him off their books.
Joshua Zirkzee staying at United is in no one’s interest
Zirksee is clearly not in Ruben Amorim’s plans, so it’s hard to see what United would gain by holding onto him for much longer.
Of course, there’s always the argument that it would be good for MUFC to have attacking depth, but that’s not a role players are comfortable with, especially in a World Cup year.
United would probably be better off if they allowed Zirksee to leave now and instead worked on finding a replacement who would provide them with better options up front.
If they hold on to the 24-year-old for too long without playing, his value will surely only decline further, and it’s hard to imagine this strategy yielding any positive results.
