2024 Indiana Horse of the Year, Demolisher, Succumbs to Laminitis

Demolisher, a homebred horse raised in Indiana by Lesia and Kenneth E. Ayers, was euthanized following a battle with laminitis, according to Blood Horse. The 4-year-old gelding had an impressive 2024 season, winning five out of six races and earning the 2024 Indiana Breed Development Horse of the Year and Indiana Breed 3-Year-Old Stallion honors.

Regia Ayers reflected on the bittersweet journey, stating, “We went from our best record as Indiana Horse of the Year to our lowest record ever where we had to say goodbye,” as reported by Blood Horse. The son of Dominus launched his career with a commanding 8 3/4-length win in his first special at Horseshoe Indianapolis in June 2024 and continued to dominate with four more wins at the same venue.

In July, Demolisher stepped up to stakes competition, clinching victory in the Governor’s Handicap for 3-year-old Indiana-bred horses by a length. His next race was the 1 1/16-mile Bucchero Handicap on turf, where he secured a surprising win against an older Indiana horse by about 1 1/4 lengths. Returning to dirt in October for the Too Much Coffee Handicap, Demolisher delivered a strong performance, winning by four lengths from start to finish.

His final race was the Grade 3 Bryan Station Stakes over a turf mile at Keeneland, where he finished eighth, six lengths behind the winner. Demolisher did not race in 2025. The gelding was trained by Cipriano Contreras and ridden by Emmanuel Esquivel in all six races. He was out of Maggie Sue, a mare by Magna Graduate.

Fan Take: Demolisher’s story is a poignant reminder of the highs and lows inherent in horse racing. His remarkable achievements and untimely passing highlight both the brilliance and fragility of racehorses, underscoring the importance of dedicated care and breeding in the sport.
