Thunder fall in nail-biter to T-Wolves, maintaining chase toward 73-win milestone

The Oklahoma City Thunder dominated early in the season, winning 24 of their first 25 games. However, they’ve recently stumbled, losing two of their last three matchups. On Friday, the NBA’s top team faced their third defeat, falling 112-107 in an intense contest against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Despite the loss, their impressive 25-3 record still puts them on track to potentially tie the NBA record with 73 wins, though there’s a long way to go in the season.

Anthony Edwards was the hero for the Timberwolves, sinking a crucial 3-pointer with 39 seconds left, followed by a key block and steal by reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on the next two possessions. Edwards, who faced criticism for never settling for ties, proved his clutch abilities with 26 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks. The Thunder initially built a 12-point lead in the first half, but Minnesota fought back after halftime to lead most of the second half. The Thunder nearly made a comeback thanks to Gilgeous-Alexander’s 35 points and seven assists.

The Timberwolves played without their head coach Chris Finch, who was ejected early in the first quarter for arguing with referees, yet they managed to outscore the Thunder 71-60. Even at the height of their winning streak and with key players like Jaylen Williams healthy, the Thunder faced challenges in matching the Golden State Warriors’ historic 73-win season. The Thunder struggled with shooting this game, hitting just 37% from the field and 28.2% from three-point range.

Despite Gilgeous-Alexander being fouled out again, Williams was limited to 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting and committed four turnovers, while Chet Holmgren added 14 points and five rebounds. The Timberwolves, well-rested after a night off, were strong opponents, whereas the Thunder were laden with fatigue from playing the second game of a back-to-back.

The Thunder will now enjoy two days of rest before hosting the 13-14 Memphis Grizzlies, followed by another back-to-back against the San Antonio Spurs.

Fan Take: This game highlights the reality that even the strongest teams face hurdles, reminding basketball fans how unpredictable and thrilling the NBA season can be. The Thunder’s pursuit of a record-setting season is a story to watch as it pushes the limits of endurance, skill, and team dynamics in today’s league.
