West Ham are set to reshuffle Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad in January as they look to make a significant improvement from the first half of the season. Many areas will need to be addressed and there will be funding available.

But those funds may not be enough to address all of West Ham’s problems.

According to Football Insider, manager Mick Brown has revealed that West Ham will have £50m available when the January transfer window opens. They plan to sign at least three deals, but there are doubts whether they will be able to do satisfactory business with the money provided.

“West Ham won’t solve the team’s problems. They want a striker for around £20m. Good luck. Don’t we all? They need a top striker who can score goals and they won’t get him for that price.”

“It’s typical of the West Ham board. They want to solve problems, but they want to do it as cheaply as possible. Instead of bringing in quality options to gradually strengthen the squad, they bring in players who aren’t good enough for a low price.”

“They have improved since Nuno came in and look like a better team, but they will never progress until they try to spend properly. And the important thing for me is that they paid £20m for a striker and then £15m for a centre-back. And spending £50 million on a midfielder isn’t going to make the team any better, because the players you brought in on the cheap aren’t any better.’

“So they could have been better off spending that £50m on a real top player who they knew would improve them, but you can’t tell them that and they won’t listen. Unless they show some ambition, the club will continue to go backwards.”

What does West Ham need to do in January?

The big problem for West Ham is in the striker department. Niklas Furkrug’s departure is almost certain, so signing a replacement should be a top priority. If you have funds left from there, you can add more.
