Santa Anita Delays Opening Day as Heavy Rain Looms

Santa Anita has decided to delay the start of its 89th winter horse racing season by two days, moving the opening from December 26 to December 28, due to severe storms predicted for the area. Typically, the racing season kicks off right after Christmas. This marks the first time since the 2019-20 season that the track in Arcadia will not begin on December 26, which was also postponed by two days back then. Weather experts forecast an atmospheric river will impact Southern California from Tuesday through Friday, prompting officials to hold turf races on turf courses starting December 28. Nate Newby, Santa Anita’s General Manager, emphasized the importance of announcing the postponement early given the heavy rain expected, noting that Opening Day is traditionally one of the most significant days of the year and the decision was made carefully. Racing will take place on December 28 and 29 before pausing and then continuing from December 31 through January 4.

Fan Take: This delay highlights how weather and natural events can significantly impact the horse racing calendar, reminding fans of the unpredictable challenges the sport faces. For enthusiasts, it serves as a reminder of the resilience and adaptability of the racing community, which must balance tradition with safety and track conditions.
