Could a Retired Goaltender Join the Oilers? Why It Might Be Wise to Slow Down for Now

There’s been significant discussion about the goaltending situation for the Edmonton Oilers, and for good reason. In a short span, the team switched their starting goaltender, only for the replacement to get injured. Following this, they relied on an AHL call-up who earned the spot after being let go by another NHL team despite underwhelming performance. Currently, Edmonton has two backup-level goalies, but neither is seen as a dependable long-term No. 1 for the NHL.

It’s no surprise that insiders believe further announcements about the situation might come.

One rumor gaining traction is the potential return of veteran Marc-Andre Fleury, who has officially retired. While it’s a possibility, it seems unlikely he’ll be the Oilers’ goalie anytime soon.

This speculation arises from two sources, though only one directly links Fleury to Edmonton. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic and TSN noted that several teams have been inquiring about Fleury’s willingness to come out of retirement, especially those struggling with their goaltending. Meanwhile, Frank Seravalli specifically mentioned the Oilers as a potential suitor, highlighting Fleury’s aspiration to play for a competitive team and pointing out the lack of a spot for him in Minnesota.

However, there are numerous challenges before Fleury could join the Oilers. Financially, Fleury likely won’t accept a contract below the NHL minimum, and a prorated $2 million deal might be necessary, meaning Edmonton would have to make salary cap adjustments. Furthermore, Fleury may not be ready to end his retirement, even if he’s still connected to the sport. Also, he would need to feel that Edmonton is the right fit. Other teams like the Montreal Canadiens, who also have goaltending issues, might compete for his services, especially since Fleury is Quebec-born and Montreal remains in playoff contention.

The idea of Fleury partnering with Tristan Jarry in Edmonton is attractive, particularly if Connor Ingram continues as backup. Still, Jarry’s injury history, Fleury’s age and time off, and Ingram’s recent return from a long absence add layers of uncertainty.

Fan Take: This potential goalie shuffle is crucial for Oilers fans desperate for stability in net, a key to deep playoff runs. Fleury’s return, if it happens, could shift the balance in the league, bringing excitement and veteran experience back to a team searching for answers.
