Brett Pesce scored, and Jacob Markstrom made 23 saves on 25 shots as the New Jersey Devils fell 2-1 to the New York Islanders at UBS Arena on Tuesday night. Pesce opened the scoring at 15:35 of the first period following persistent forechecking by Timo Meyer, Dawson Mercer, and Nico Hischier, who won a battle near the goal line, allowing Devils captain Hischier to assist Pesce’s wrist shot that beat Islanders’ goalie David Rittich.

Hischier’s assist on Pesce’s goal marked his 270th career assist, tying him with Bobby Holik for 11th place in franchise history in assists. Later, with seven minutes remaining in the second period, Markstrom attempted to control the puck outside the crease but accidentally deflected it onto Simon Holmstrom’s stick, who scored into an open net to level the game at 1-1. Then, at 1:15 left in the final period, Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech netted the game-winning goal, sealing a 2-1 win for New York.

The Devils will resume play after the holiday break, facing the Washington Capitals on Saturday night at the Prudential Center. For the latest updates, interviews, and detailed coverage, fans can visit The Hockey News’ New Jersey Devils section.
