Alexander Isak will be sidelined for “several months” following surgery on a broken foot. Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slott, remains optimistic that the English record signing will return before the conclusion of his first season at the club.

Isak suffered the injury while netting the opener in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory against Tottenham—a match where he scored his third goal since transferring from Newcastle for $175 million last September. “This injury is going to take significant time to heal,” Slott remarked. “It’s a major setback for both him and the team.”

Nonetheless, Slott expressed confidence that Isak will make a comeback before the season ends. This outlook raises doubts about the 26-year-old’s participation in Sweden’s World Cup qualifiers, which begin in late March against Ukraine. There’s an emerging sentiment that Isak’s debut year at Liverpool, as one of their most expensive signings ever, may not be delivering expected results, particularly as the team struggles with his fitness after a tumultuous pre-season.

Reflecting on Isak’s challenges, Slott acknowledged the difficulties players often face when transitioning to a new club. “Joining a new team can be a tough experience,” he noted. “He was eager to display his abilities, but circumstances made that challenging.”

Unfortunately for Liverpool, Isak’s absence due to injury, coupled with the unavailability of players like Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo, places additional pressure on the squad. The need for reinforcements is urgent, especially since depth has been a recurring issue for the team despite heavy summer investments. While Liverpool may not need an exact replacement for Isak, the squad’s thinness has raised questions about their readiness for upcoming matches.

Slott’s immediate focus is on the upcoming home games. “I’m prioritizing our next two matches,” he stated, stressing the importance of player dedication and fan support. With the transfer window approaching, Liverpool will need to address gaps in their lineup, especially given their interest in signing versatile players like Antoine Semenyo.

Despite Semenyo’s stellar season, there’s an awareness that his expected goals have slightly decreased. With a hefty $87.8 million release clause on the table, Liverpool may also look for less costly options to shore up their options.

One quick fix could have been recalling Harvey Elliott from his loan at Aston Villa, but that avenue has proven complicated. Elliott, currently under contract with Villa following a seasonal loan, remains unable to play for other clubs due to FIFA regulations, leaving Liverpool with limited immediate solutions.

The situation amplifies the importance of effective strategies in the transfer market; addressing squad depth could prove crucial for Liverpool’s aspirations this season. The club’s upcoming decisions will likely influence their competitive stature in both domestic and international arenas.
