Canadian Warns: “Sending Dobes Could Spark Serious Issues”

Earlier this week on 98.5 Sports, former Montreal Canadiens goalie coach Stephen Waite mentioned that sending goalie Jakub Dobes to the Laval Rocket wouldn’t be a big issue. Since Dobes is on exemption waivers, moving him to the Rocket wouldn’t risk losing him. However, I disagree with the idea that it wouldn’t cause any harm. Although Dobes isn’t considered a future star like Jacob Fowler, it’s unfair for him to bear the consequences of Samuel Montembeault’s struggles.

Dobes started the season impressively and was even mentioned as a Calder Trophy contender early on. Despite Montembeault’s poor performance, he was still favored over Dobes, who arguably deserved to be in the net. Dobes seemed frustrated when Martin St. Louis kept Montembeault as the starter despite struggles. Sending Dobes to Laval would only add to his frustration, which he doesn’t deserve, especially since he hasn’t had Montembeault’s issues. Doing so could just unsettle his confidence.

Montembeault’s situation is tough, no question. But the NHL is a results-focused league, and if a goaltender can’t deal with competition, his future is uncertain. While having three goalies, two of them rookies needing ice time, isn’t ideal, if someone must be sent down, Fowler makes more sense. Dropping Montembeault risks losing him, and despite his current form, the Canadiens took a chance on him hoping for a fresh start. The goalie market is thin, as indicated by GMs reaching out to Marc-Andre Fleury about coming out of retirement.

Fowler has played well but is still inexperienced in his first pro season. At 21, he needs lots of playing time, which the AHL can provide. Since the Canadiens aren’t likely Stanley Cup contenders this season, it’s wise to let Fowler develop in the AHL. If the season ends with two goalies and Montembeault doesn’t fit, the team can consider moving him this summer to clear the path for Fowler. But for now, Dobes should be left alone and not punished for others’ struggles.

Fan Take: This debate highlights the delicate balance teams face managing young talent and veterans in crucial positions like goalie. How the Canadiens handle Dobes, Fowler, and Montembeault this season could shape their goaltending future and serve as a valuable lesson in roster management for the entire sport.
