It’s been another roller coaster for Manchester United, with a year full of deception under manager Ruben Amorim.

In the Premier League standings, the Red Devils are in 13th place with 12 wins from 36 games and 46 points. It’s not enough, but there’s no doubt that we’ve seen signs of progress in the last month or two.

Bruno Fernandes continues to be the club’s bright light, but it’s a shame that his 2025 campaign was cut short too soon after picking up a rare injury in the recent 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

Could this have changed United’s transfer plans? The signing of Manchester City-bound Antoine Semenyo is currently underway, but it would not be far-fetched to suggest that the center of the park is a priority position for INEOS heading into the January market.

Manchester United’s January transfer plans

Fernandes’ hamstring injury will change Man United’s winter transfer strategy. Indeed, the 30-year-old captain is not expected to be sidelined for long, but it is unlikely we will see him again until the new year.

This is perhaps the opportunity Koby Mainu has been waiting for for a long time, but the talented 20-year-old suffered a calf injury in training and could be out for the next few weeks himself. It was just his luck.

According to talkSPORT, United technical director Jason Wilcox is already eyeing a replacement for Semenyo, with RB Leipzig’s Yann Diomande also being considered.

Diomande, 19, has started his life in Germany well and turned out to be quite the rising star. His talent was undeniable and his employers transfer-listed him for a whopping £87 million.

He definitely has an even higher ceiling than Semenyo and given the circumstances, he might prove to be a signing for Amorim’s own Fernandes at the Theater of Dreams.

Why Yann Diomande is perfect for Manchester United

Diomande is a two-faced winger who has established himself as one of the most clinical teenagers in Europe this season. He joined RB Leipzig from Spanish side Leganes this summer, but only played 10 games in La Liga last year, scoring two goals.

With seven goals and four assists already this season, the player described by journalist Antonio Mango as a “special, special footballer” has the potential to become a superstar, suggesting he could be a new version of United’s talismanic Fernandes.

This argument is further strengthened by the fact that the Portuguese will arrive in January, just as he did when he moved from Sporting Lisbon in 2020 for an initial transfer fee of £47 million.

Diomand is dangerous and direct. Although he is not stylistically similar to Fernandes, his prolificity and ability to deliver something unique suggests he could enjoy similar influences. After all, he is one of the most exciting offensive talents in the world.

Additionally, he ranks in the top 6% of his position mates in shot-created actions, top 3% in progressive carries, top 1% in take-on attempts, and top 12 in tackles per 90 over the past year, according to FBref.

A successful take-on is recorded when a player, while still in possession of the ball, directly carries the ball and defeats his opponent.

There’s no question Diomande has superstar potential and given United’s vested interest in Semenyo over the past few weeks, it’s clear he fits the mold set by Amorim’s long-term plans.

The Ivory Coast international has quickly established himself as an elite talent and although it would cost a significant amount of money to bring him to Old Trafford in 2026, there is no doubt that Man United will get a good return.

Just like they did with Fernandes.
