Despite his intimidating name, Naughty New Yorker is anything but fierce at Old Friends at Cabin Creek in Greenfield Center, New York. This renowned Thoroughbred, known as “Vito” to those who care for him, serves as a gentle ambassador for racehorse aftercare at the 40-acre ranch managed by Joanne and Mark Pepper. Since arriving in March 2021, the 23-year-old son of Quiet American has charmed visitors with his calm nature, affection for people, and regal presence, living comfortably in a paddock previously used by other famous horses.

Naughty New Yorker enjoyed a successful racing career, winning 12 of 67 starts and making his mark primarily in New York, notably with multiple victories in stakes races like the Alex M. Robb at Aqueduct. After retiring in 2011, he spent nine years as a stallion before settling into a peaceful retirement where he enjoys the freedom to roam and the love of the public during tours. The farm, a nonprofit accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), highlights the importance of providing dignified retirements for racehorses, supported by significant contributions from the New York racing community.

Joanne Pepper praises Naughty New Yorker’s friendly demeanor, especially with children, and emphasizes the vital role aftercare programs play in horses’ lives post-racing. Old Friends at Cabin Creek relies on public donations and industry support to continue its mission, welcoming visitors year-round to connect with and learn about retired Thoroughbreds like Vito.

Fan Take: This story shines a light on how retired racehorses can live fulfilling lives after their careers, a message that resonates deeply with horse racing fans who care about the welfare of these athletes. Supporting aftercare not only honors the legacy of champions like Naughty New Yorker but also strengthens the future of the sport by promoting responsible stewardship of its equine stars.
