3 Must-Sign MLB Free Agents for the Astros: Why Zack Littell, Harrison Bader, and Utility Players Could Be Game-Changers

The Houston Astros are currently at a critical juncture. Despite the Seattle Mariners clinching the American League West title with only 90 wins and missing the playoffs for the first time in nine years, Houston’s traditionally powerful offense ranked just 21st in MLB for runs allowed (686). Known for being consistent championship contenders for the last decade, the Astros now must make strategic moves quickly to regain their competitive edge.

Here are three free agents Houston should consider signing:

1. Zach Littell: Littell, who set a career-high in wins in 2025 with a 3.81 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 130 strikeouts across 186.2 innings, would be a valuable addition to Houston’s starting rotation. The Astros have been strong in starting pitching but could benefit from another reliable arm, especially since ace Framber Valdez is currently a free agent. Littell has proven to be durable and effective, showcasing a solid four-pitch arsenal and consistent performance over two seasons.

2. Harrison Bader: Houston’s trade of star outfielder Kyle Tucker last offseason may have weakened their outfield depth. Bader, who hit 17 home runs with a .449 slugging percentage in 2025, offers Gold Glove-caliber defense and has recently played extensively both in center and left field. Bader’s right-handed bat and excellent defensive skills could fill a vital gap in Houston’s lineup and outfield defense.

3. Isaiah Kiner-Falefa: Known for his versatility, Kiner-Falefa can play almost any position except first base, including multiple infield and outfield spots, and has even served as a catcher. In 2025, he showed solid contact hitting with a .262 average and was a key utility player for the Toronto Blue Jays. For Houston, he would provide invaluable flexibility and depth, especially in case of injuries to key infielders like Carlos Correa or José Paredes.

Fan Take: These potential signings highlight Houston’s need to balance their roster with both pitching and versatile defensive talent to stay competitive. For baseball fans, this signals an exciting offseason where the Astros, a perennial powerhouse, must adapt and evolve to continue challenging for championships in a shifting landscape.
