Ilya Topria Returns from Hiatus to Champion Mixed Martial Arts Legend’s Groundbreaking First UFC Milestone

According to a former rival, Ilya Topuria has yet to complete his quest for success.

In June of this year, Topuria made history by becoming the 10th UFC fighter to hold titles in two weight classes, quickly adding the lightweight belt after a short reign as featherweight champion.

He asserted his dominance in the lightweight division by knocking out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317, and it appears the Spanish fighter is eager to keep climbing weight classes. Known as “El Matador,” Topuria has frequently expressed his ambition to become the first UFC athlete to win championships in three divisions, and many experts believe he has the ability to achieve this remarkable feat.

Urijah Faber, a former WEC champion, recently identified Topuria as the most likely UFC fighter to claim titles in three weight categories once he returns from an indefinite break he is taking to address personal matters. Faber highlighted Topuria’s powerful skill set that can adapt across different weight classes, emphasizing that success in multiple divisions ultimately depends on technique, determination, and fighting spirit—all qualities Topuria possesses.

Topuria has his sights set on the welterweight title next, with the current champion Islam Makhachev standing as the key obstacle.

Meanwhile, Paddy Pimblett is set to contest the interim lightweight title against Justin Gaethje at UFC 324 during Topuria’s absence. Dana White indicated the interim champion would face Topuria later in 2026, but Pimblett hinted that Topuria’s personal issues might force him to relinquish the belt sooner. Pimblett expressed sympathy for Topuria’s situation but suggested that if the champion doesn’t return by mid-2026, he could be stripped of the title, potentially making the interim winner the undisputed lightweight champion.

Fan Take: This development is pivotal for MMA fans, as Topuria’s pursuit of a third division title could redefine greatness in the UFC. However, his indefinite hiatus introduces uncertainty into the lightweight division’s future, making upcoming matchups and potential title changes compelling storylines for the sport.
