Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka has been linked with a surprise move to Tottenham in recent days, sparking widespread speculation ahead of the January transfer window.
Turkish journalist Yagız Sabungkıoğlu made the claims at the weekend, saying that Fenerbahçe remain keen on signing Leon Goleteska, but that the north London club are in contact with the player’s agent regarding a surprise move in January.
He insisted that any move would depend heavily on whether Bayern Munich allow him to leave.
The speculation has since gained momentum, with Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg sharing what he knows about the situation.
Sky Sports Latest News Goretzka vs Tottenham
According to Plettenberg, Tottenham are not actively pursuing a move for Goretzka in January.
The German journalist claims that there is currently no sign that the midfielder will leave Bayern during the winter period.
“Please understand that despite other reports, as also reported by @SebSB, Tottenham are not committing to a January move for Leon Goretzka. This is clearly denied,” he said.
“At the moment there is no sign that Goretzka will leave FC Bayern in January. His contract expires in the summer. Vincent Kompany rates him very highly and appreciates his performance.”
What’s interesting about his latest information is that, according to him, Kompany rates him very highly and appreciates his performance.
However, his role this season has been more rotational than in previous campaigns. The midfielder is yet to start in the Champions League, but has featured prominently in the Bundesliga, starting 12 of Bayern’s 15 league games so far.
Goretzka’s contract is set to expire in the summer, and Bayern could end up having to make a big decision. Either risk losing him on a free transfer or consider making money up front.
Goretzka’s tenure at Bayern Munich in numbers
The versatile midfielder joined the Bundesliga giants from Schalke on a free transfer in 2018 and has since made 287 appearances for the club in all competitions.
In those 287 games, he scored 46 goals and assisted 48 more.
The great thing about him is his versatility. Goretzka can play in several roles, but is most effective as a central midfielder, scoring 43 goals and 40 assists during his career.
He also played as a defensive midfielder, contributing 11 goals and 18 assists in 79 appearances, demonstrating his ability to influence the game even from deep positions.
His outstanding performances have previously attracted interest from Manchester United.
Although Plettenberg has dismissed the link, he cannot completely rule out a move in January given his contract situation.
