Former Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez is reportedly nearing an agreement to join MLS team Columbus Crew, as he aims to stay fit ahead of the 2026 World Cup. After leaving Liga MX’s León, Rodriguez was initially expected to stay in Mexico, but it now looks like he’s set to head to the United States.

James’ Next Chapter

Since departing Real Madrid at the end of 2020, Rodriguez has had a varied career, playing for clubs like Everton, Al Rayyan, Olympiacos, São Paulo, and Rayo Vallecano before landing in Mexico. While with León, he made 34 appearances, scored 5 goals, and provided 9 assists. According to reports, Columbus Crew, under Coach Oskar Olstos, is hoping to finalize a deal despite the absence of a manager following Wilfried Nancy’s departure to Celtic.

Other Interested Clubs

Orlando City has also expressed interest in Rodriguez, while Santos reports no desire to sign him. The Colombian star, who has 122 international caps, is targeting a spot in the 2026 World Cup, expressing a dream to bring the trophy home, especially as he approaches 35. Despite being runners-up in the Copa America, Colombia hasn’t secured a major title since 2011.

“Participating in a World Cup is always a great honor. At 34, I feel even more motivated because time flies for everyone. I feel great approaching the tournament, and with this incredible team, we can face anyone. We are aiming for significant achievements, specifically the World Cup.”

James’ Legacy

Rodriguez has made a significant impact in past World Cups, famously scoring an incredible long-range volley in 2014, which won him the Puskas Trophy and the Golden Boot for scoring six goals. Colombia reached the quarter-finals that year but has since faced difficulties, failing to qualify for the 2022 tournament. Rodriguez may play a key role in altering Colombia’s current trajectory if he establishes himself successfully in the MLS.

He remains a crucial player for Colombia, having been active in the qualifiers and contributing important goals and assists. Despite recent setbacks, including a loss in the 2024 Copa America final to Argentina, he continues to contribute significantly.

Looking Ahead

Colombia is already aware of two of its opponents for the group stage: Uzbekistan and Portugal. They may also face New Caledonia, Jamaica, or the Democratic Republic of Congo, depending on playoff outcomes. James is eager to secure a club, and Columbus Crew seems to be his next destination.

Joining the MLS would position Rodriguez alongside other stars like Lionel Messi and Son Heung-min, showcasing the league’s rising profile. If the Crew can finalize the deal, it would be a significant move in the soccer landscape.

Fan Take: This potential signing brings excitement to soccer fans as it underscores the increasing allure of Major League Soccer, attracting established stars to the league. James Rodriguez’s presence could elevate the competitive scene in MLS and inspire fellow players and fans alike, enhancing the sport’s profile in North America.
