Florida’s late lead slips away as Montreal clinches 3-2 overtime victory

Over recent seasons, the Florida Panthers have become known for their remarkable comebacks. Their goal has been to erase deficits, whether small or large, during games. However, on Tuesday, the tables turned against Florida when the Montreal Canadiens staged a dramatic rally. The Canadiens scored twice in the final minute to push the game into the third period and clinched the victory with a power-play goal in overtime.

The focus for much of the game was on goaltending. Montreal’s Sam Montembeau and Florida’s Daniil Tarasov each flawlessly defended their net, stopping all 17 shots they faced through 40 minutes, keeping the score tied at zero going into the final period. Florida’s Brad Marchand, who was celebrated before the game for reaching 1,000 career points, broke the deadlock with a power-play goal midway through the third.

Sam Reinhart extended Florida’s lead with a score from a difficult angle with just under five minutes remaining, seemingly sealing the game. But Montreal refused to give up, with young star Cole Caufield scoring 32 seconds later to breathe new life into the Canadiens’ bench. With goalie Montembeau pulled for an extra attacker, Nick Suzuki evened the score with 1:22 left.

In overtime, a questionable penalty on Marchand led to a tense 4-on-3 power play, during which Suzuki scored his second goal of the night, sealing a heartbreaking loss for Florida. As Florida heads into a two-day break before the Winter Classic, they face the disappointment of this tough defeat.
