The Daily Record recently reported that five Glasgow Rangers players will be allowed to leave Ibrox before the end of the January transfer window.
Kieran Dewell, Clinton Ciara, Nedim Bajrami, Danilo and Ravi Matondo are on permanent contracts and are free to leave in the coming weeks, while Lyall Cameron could be released on loan for the remainder of the season.
For example, it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that Danny Rolle wants to move on from Dowell. That’s because he hasn’t played a minute of competitive soccer since August, despite being given a chance by Russell Martin earlier in the season.
Rangers in talks to sell flop
In addition to Dowell and the four other players mentioned in the Daily Record article earlier this month, another Light Blues failure is set to leave the club.
Glasgow Rangers are “in talks” with Argentine side Huracán over a move for Oscar Cortes to South America, according to Joshua Barry.
The winger, who signed with Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen, is currently on loan at Spanish side Sporting Gijon, but this move will shorten his loan period and move him to Argentina.
According to Barry, both clubs are currently negotiating a loan deal with an option or obligation to buy, meaning they are considering selling the Colombian forward.
However, it remains to be seen how much Furkan will be prepared to pay at the end of his loan to make the deal permanent in the summer transfer window.
Why Cortes was a bigger failure than Dowell
Cortes now appears to be heading towards leaving the club permanently, but it’s hard to say anything other than to say he’s an even bigger failure than Dowell.
The English midfielder has not had success at Ibrox. According to Transfermarkt, since joining on a free transfer from Norwich in 2023, he has played in 38 games and contributed two goals and three assists.
He hasn’t shown enough quality in the final third, which is why he is at a disadvantage ahead of his departure in January, but it must also be recognized that the former Canaries star arrived on a free transfer.
However, Cortes signed for a hefty £4.5 million from Lens in the summer of 2025, after adding a buyout obligation to his 2024 loan deal.
According to Sofascore, the buyout requirement meant that Gers had to pay £4.5 million for a player who has made just one goal and one assist in 16 Scottish Premiership appearances in 18 months at the club.
Rangers defender Richard Foster said he “didn’t think anything” of Cortes when he was given the chance just before his loan deal became permanent, and caretaker manager Barry Ferguson suggested he needed to increase his level of training to get more game time.
Despite suffering during an 18-month loan spell after signing on a permanent basis, the winger was sent out on loan to Sporting Gijon for the 2025/26 season, but according to Sofascore he has failed to register a goal or assist in eight competitive appearances.

As you can see from the table above, Cortez and Dowell are likely to end their Rangers careers for good with some pretty dismal stats considering they are both offensive players.
However, the Colombian appears to have been the biggest flop and the worst signing of the pair, having paid a hefty fee rather than joining on a free transfer and failing to offer as much on the pitch.
Rangers have only signed eight players in their history for more than £4.5 million, including Ryan Kent, Youssef Cermiti and Torre Andre Flo, which goes to show just how expensive Cortez’s contract was.
With that in mind, it remains to be seen how much money he will recoup for his services as part of the option to make this potential loan permanent, but the 22-year-old no-gooder could end up going down as one of the biggest failures of all time.
