Arsenal legend Sol Campbell has suggested his former club should consider signing Marc Gehi to beat Liverpool.
The Crystal Palace centre-back established himself as one of the Premier League’s top players during his time at Selhurst Park and there will be plenty of interest in him now that his contract is coming to an end.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Guehi by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, with Campbell apparently backing the move ahead of other suitors such as Liverpool.
“Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace is a top player. I know Liverpool have been sniffing around him and he’s someone I would like to inquire about,” Campbell told Sky Bet.
Marc Gehi has been linked with Arsenal despite already boasting good defensive depth
The link with Guehi comes as a bit of a surprise, given that Arsenal already have plenty of quality and strength in their defense.
The Gunners brought in Pierro Hincapie and Cristian Mosquera over the summer, and although both have made good starts, they are already clearly behind William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães in the pecking order.
Ben White, Riccardo Calafioli and Julian Timber can also play at centre-back if needed, so it remains to be seen how Guehi will be able to get more minutes at the Emirates Stadium.
The England international is a great player, but he won’t be good enough to replace Saliba or Gabriel unless Mikel Arteta has a new position in mind.
Marc Gehi should choose to move to Liverpool
If Guehi wants to play for a big club where he can actually play an important role in the starting XI, Liverpool would be his choice.
The Reds need a long-term successor to the aging Virgil van Dijk, but there could be a big hole in the team if Ibrahima Konate leaves the club when his contract expires this summer.
Liverpool are not currently in top form, but Gehi’s arrival could help Arne Slott get the team back to top form next season.
