  • Manchester United desperately need to rebuild their midfield
  • United’s current options are struggling

Manchester United are continuing to strengthen their midfield in the summer, with four key targets firmly in place following Ruben Amorim’s departure.

According to The Sun, the club continues to monitor Elliott Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), Carlos Bareva (Brighton) and Alex Scott (Bournemouth), but there are no plans to sign any of them in the current January transfer window.

United’s stance remains unchanged, with no new midfielders arriving this month.

Club executives want to wait until a permanent manager is appointed in the summer before making any long-term squad decisions.

Interim manager Michael Carrick will be in charge for the remainder of the season and the club believe it would be counterproductive to spend large sums of money without a clear tactical vision for the next head coach.

There is an increasing need to strengthen the midfield.

Remarkably, United have only signed two central midfielders in the past seven years, a period marked by inconsistency, squad imbalance and constant changes in managers.

As a result, the midfield unit lacks cohesion, creativity and physical presence.

Casemiro’s contract expires in June, and he is widely expected to leave the club at the end of this season.

Once an elite ball-winner, the Brazilian has struggled with injuries and pace, making a rejuvenation of the midfield inevitable.

Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte, who was signed in 2024, has not lived up to expectations and has struggled greatly with the speed and physical demands of the Premier League. His performance raised serious doubts internally about his long-term suitability.

Koby Mainu is seen as a key figure in the club’s future, but he has not developed as quickly as expected.

While some within United believe that his progress has been slowed by limited game time under Amorim, the club are optimistic that a stable environment under a new permanent manager will allow him to reach his potential.

Despite the obvious urgency, United are opting for patience. With the club still undergoing internal restructuring and preparing for a new management era, the club believe that a January signing will be rushed, expensive or inconsistent with future plans.

Instead, it is expected that there will be a major midfield overhaul during the summer period, with two new signings likely to be included as part of the midfield rebuild.
