SportsBoom has revealed that both Manchester City and Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Matheus Fernandes. Fernandes is a 21-year-old midfielder currently attracting attention as one of West Ham United’s few bright spots in a difficult season.

The Hammers are embroiled in a tense relegation battle and Fernandes’ contract reportedly includes a relegation release clause, details of which have caused alarm among several elite clubs.

According to reports, both Manchester clubs could move on if West Ham are eliminated from the Championship.

Fernandes is seen internally as a long-term project with elite potential, but his age, versatility and ability make him one of the Premier League’s most attractive young midfielders outside the top six.

West Ham United are in a difficult situation

West Ham are in a difficult situation. As the club sits at the lower end of the league standings, retaining the best players is essential for survival.

However, Sportboom claim that the Hammers are open to negotiating an early departure in January if it prevents them from losing the midfielder significantly cheaper in the summer if relegation occurs.

This creates a complex scenario for coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who must balance the immediate need for first-team quality with the financial risks of relegation.

Fernandes has been West Ham’s most consistent performer this season, starting 19 of their 20 Premier League games. During that period, he had two goals and two assists.

A January transfer is still a possibility, especially if West Ham decide to cash in, but any big move is likely to be postponed until the summer.

The outcome will depend heavily on whether the Hammers avoid relegation, and Fernandes’ release clause will be a key factor if the bid to remain in the club fails.
