Naomi Osaka won her second round match at the Australian Open, but her on-court play wasn’t the biggest talking point of the match. After Osaka’s victory, the 28-year-old nervously shook hands with her Romanian opponent, Solana Cirstea.

After the match, which Osaka won (6-3, 4-6, 6-2), she met Cirstea in the middle of the court and shook hands. Cirstea’s handshake was very brief and Osaka said something. Afterwards, the two men exchanged words near the referee’s seat.

After the match, when Osaka was asked about the situation, she said that she thought Cirstea was angry that Osaka had verbally abused her during the match. This clip helps provide context.

When asked what it took to break through Cirstea, Osaka replied, “Apparently she was annoyed by a lot of ‘come on’s.” “I think it was her last Australian Open, so I was disappointed that she was upset about it,” Osaka later said, according to BBC News.

According to BBC News, in a separate press conference, Osaka apologized for her post-match comments, saying she did not mean to disrespect Cirstea.

“I’m a little confused. I think her emotions were very high. I also want to apologize,” the four-time major champion said.

“I think the first few things I said on the court were rude. I don’t like to disrespect people. It’s not my job.”

Cirstea, 35, downplayed the post-match exchange, saying there was “no drama” between the two players.

If Osaka wins, she will advance to the third round. This is the first time she has reached the third round at the Australian Open since 2022. She will face Madison Inglis on Saturday.

On the men’s side, Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner are making great strides.

On the men’s team, Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner made quick work of their opponents on Thursday. Both players won in straight sets, but Fritz needed a tiebreak to defeat Vit Kopriva in the third set.

Fritz is aiming to repeat last year’s run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open. It was his best performance at the event so far. To get there, he needs to beat Stan Wawrinka on Saturday before potentially facing No. 5 men’s ranking Lorenzo Musetti in the fourth round.

Sinner has won the last two Australian Opens and is aiming for his third straight title at this tournament. He will face Elliott Spizzilli on Saturday.

Belinda Bencic is shocked by Czech teen Nikola Bartunkova

Belinda Bencic entered the Australian Open as one of the top women in the rankings. However, Bencic lost in the second round to 19-year-old Nikola Bartunkova and had to return home early.

Bartunkova’s impressive performance won the match 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.

This is Bartunkova’s first appearance at the Australian Open. It only took her two matches to get her signature win at this event.

Among the other women’s teams, second-ranked Iga Swiatek defeated Marie Bouzkova in straight sets. Elena Rybakina also won in straight sets.
