The initial roster for the NBA All-Star Game’s World Team is nearly complete, with the fate of LeBron James’ record-breaking All-Star selection now resting in the hands of his coach or possibly Commissioner Adam Silver. Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Denver’s Nikola Jokic, Los Angeles Lakers’ Luka Doncic, and San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama were named Monday as starters for the upcoming All-Star Game, held at the Los Angeles Clippers’ arena in Inglewood, California. These players are expected to join the World Team to compete against two U.S. teams in a new three-team format for the midseason event.
Ten starters were announced from both conferences—Golden State’s Stephen Curry, New York’s Jalen Brunson, Detroit’s Cade Cunningham, Philadelphia’s Tyrese Maxey, and Boston’s Jaylen Brown are projected to join the U.S. teams. The game format consists of three mini-games lasting 12 minutes each, featuring a round-robin tournament where the top two teams advance to a 12-minute final game.
Gilgeous-Alexander shared his excitement for being selected, saying it’s a dream come true to play alongside his idols in such a prestigious event. Starters are chosen through a weighted voting system: 50% fan votes, 25% from a panel of 100 broadcasters and reporters, and 25% from NBA players.
The concept of America versus the World has been discussed for years and has finally been implemented this season to bring fresh excitement to the All-Star festivities. Coinciding with the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, this national pride-themed event is broadcast on NBC networks.
The format features three teams with at least eight players each. In the tournament setup, Team A plays Team B in the first game, the winner faces Team C in the second game, and the loser plays Team C in the third game. The two teams with the best records move on to the championship, with point differential breaking any ties.
Traditional weighted voting is still used to select starters and reserves, but the change to three teams with eight players each means at least 15 players will technically be “starters” in the tournament. Hence, some players not initially announced as starters will likely start in the games on February 15. Rosters may also expand if needed to balance team sizes.
LeBron James was not named a starter for the first time in 22 years. His streak of 20 consecutive All-Star Game appearances ended last season due to injury, but he could still participate as a reserve. Coaches will vote to determine 14 reserve spots, with injury replacements named by Silver if necessary.
Now in his 23rd season, James recently ended a streak of 1,297 consecutive games scoring at least 10 points and has missed 17 games so far this season. To qualify for postseason awards like All-NBA honors, he will likely need to play every remaining game for the Lakers. Notably, he was named All-NBA in 21 of his first 22 seasons, including second team last year.
