Connor Girish Commits to NASCAR, Leaving Door Open for a Future F1 Challenge

Connor Girish, aged 19, already boasts a class victory at the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, having triumphed in his LMP2 debut two years ago. This weekend marks his GTP debut with the Whelen Cadillac team, where he’s thoroughly enjoying the challenge of vying for a podium finish.

In just a few weeks, Girish will be behind the wheel of the No. 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet, starting his first full-time season in the NASCAR Cup Series. He is a rising star with a remarkable record, having secured wins across multiple series, including ARCA, Mazda MX-5 Cup, CARS Tour, Trans Am, IMSA, and the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. Earlier in his career, he also claimed the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy. Notably, Girish is one of the rare drivers who can match seasoned competitor Shane van Gisbergen on road and street circuits.

Girish’s swift ascent has earned him the label of a generational talent, underscored by his impressive 10 wins during his rookie year in the NOAPS series in 2025. Last summer, he famously won seven out of the eight races he entered but narrowly missed out on the championship due to a single-race championship format—a format NASCAR has since eliminated for the coming season.

During the Rolex 24 broadcast, Girish joined the Peacock Pitbox and discussed his future ambitions. As a Red Bull athlete currently racing a Cadillac at the event, he acknowledged the recent trend of drivers like Colton Herta leaving strong IndyCar careers to chase dreams of F1 seats, especially with Cadillac’s upcoming Formula 1 entry.

When asked about his own F1 aspirations, Girish shared, “Racing in F1 has been a childhood dream. If I achieve success early in NASCAR, I wouldn’t turn down the opportunity. I really enjoy NASCAR just as much, especially competing on America’s biggest stage. In three weeks, I’ll be racing in my first Daytona 500, and I’m pumped for the season ahead. Right now, my focus is firmly on NASCAR.”

He added that although he would welcome a future opportunity in Formula 1, his current priority is excelling in stock car racing before considering any major transitions.

Fan Take: For NASCAR fans, Connor Girish’s soaring trajectory adds fresh excitement and undeniable talent to the Cup Series, promising thrilling competition ahead. His openness about potential F1 ambitions also highlights NASCAR’s growing appeal to versatile drivers, signaling an exciting era of cross-series talent exchange that could elevate the sport’s global profile.
