Penske’s Porsche Claims Third Consecutive Rolex 24 Victory, Brightening a Challenging Year

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Team Penske faced challenges across much of its 2025 racing season, but its Porsche Penske motorsports program stood out as a major highlight. While the IndyCar division struggled, capturing only two wins and failing to contend for the championship, the team’s leadership was shaken by an Indy 500 inspection violation that led to the dismissal of three executives and forced Roger Penske to rethink how IndyCar’s technical regulations are managed.

In NASCAR, Penske’s dominance ended after a three-year championship streak. The 2022, 2023, and 2024 Cup Series champs Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney did not make it to the finals this year, although the team’s three drivers combined for six wins. Blaney’s sixth-place finish in the overall standings was the best result the team could achieve in what was a difficult season.

Marking Team Penske’s 60th anniversary, it was the sports car program that set the tone for success. The No. 7 Porsche secured a victory at the prestigious Rolex 24 at Daytona, earning Penske his third straight win at this iconic endurance race. Reflecting on the achievement, Penske highlighted the teamwork, determination, and resilience that fueled their ongoing success and noted that a Daytona win was an ideal way to kick off the milestone season.

The sports car program has been a powerhouse, winning both Rolex and IMSA overall championships in 2024 and 2025. Brazilian driver Felipe Nasr distinguished himself as the only driver to secure three consecutive Rolex titles, contributing to a winning streak that spans six seasons. Fellow Brazilian Hélio Castroneves has also been part of victorious teams for the past three years. Penske’s hat-trick puts them in rare company, as only Chip Ganassi Racing and Wayne Taylor Racing have won three straight Rolex races in the past 64 years.

Penske fondly recalled Nasr’s first meeting with the team, joking about the driver’s arrival in a navy suit under sweltering conditions, which Penske felt demonstrated Nasr’s dedication and suitability for the program. At the time, Nasr was competing for a championship with Action Express Racing, owned by NASCAR chairman Jim France, making the secretive meeting to discuss joining Penske all the more remarkable. Nasr remembered the moment vividly, feeling nervous as he made his way through the heat, only to be warmly invited into the team by Roger Penske himself—a meeting that would spark something special.

Despite this triumphant sports car chapter, the broader Team Penske program faces uncertainty. The team introduced new lineups in both sports car and IndyCar racing for 2026, with 24-year-old David Markus taking over from veteran Will Power in IndyCar—Power, who turns 45 on the season opener, did not have his contract renewed largely due to his age. Meanwhile, the NASCAR squad remains intact but may face challenges adapting to a revised championship format that differs significantly from the winner-take-all system under which Logano and Blaney claimed their titles.

Looking ahead to 2026, predicting Team Penske’s trajectory remains difficult. Many insiders view this year’s Indy 500 controversies as a significant setback requiring considerable recovery and adjustment. Still, the recent Rolex win underscores that Penske remains determined and relentless in its pursuit of excellence, aiming to restore all its racing programs to championship form.

Fan Take: Although this news focuses on motorsports, it highlights the value of resilience and reinvention in competitive sports. Basketball fans can appreciate how Team Penske’s ability to adapt after setbacks mirrors the perseverance needed for teams to contend at the highest levels, signaling that strategic leadership and fresh talent are key drivers of sustained success across all sports.
