Conor McGregor’s Comeback Date Uncertain Amid Complex UFC White House Negotiations

The UFC is considering bringing Conor McGregor back through a different avenue.

The sport’s biggest star hasn’t competed since 2021 when he suffered a broken leg in his trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. Since then, many doubted a rematch would happen as McGregor’s comeback plans and other projects failed to materialize. However, talks of a return for the Irish fighter are gaining momentum for 2026.

Following President Donald Trump’s announcement that a UFC event would take place at the White House to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary this year, McGregor quickly expressed interest in participating. Yet, while organizers hope to feature a major name to headline the June 14th card, several factors could prevent McGregor from taking part.

Dana White has not guaranteed McGregor’s involvement at the White House during UFC 324 fight week, and for good reason. The event will have a limited audience made up of VIPs and dignitaries only, meaning it won’t be broadcast on pay-per-view nor will there be a live gate with fans, as Paramount’s $7.7 billion deal with the UFC dictates. Additionally, Ariel Helwani reported that the event will run without sponsors, further restricting revenue.

This financial setup poses challenges for the UFC regarding its marquee fighter, especially since McGregor intends to renegotiate his contract after the PPV. As Helwani noted on X, Dana White appears aware of the situation despite his claims otherwise, and the lack of PPV, gate, and sponsors could make it difficult for McGregor to participate. The UFC may instead hold him for their July PPV event, where ticket sales and sponsorships could be maximized.

The uncertainty surrounding McGregor’s comeback and the White House card will soon be resolved. Ahead of UFC 324, Dana White announced that matchmaking for the Washington, D.C. event scheduled for June will be finalized shortly after the fight concludes. Typically handling matchups early in the week, White indicated that the White House fight card plans will be clear by mid-February, potentially revealing the lineup sooner than fans expect.

Fan Take: This update is crucial for fight fans because McGregor’s return could significantly impact UFC’s profile and marketability. How the UFC navigates his comeback amidst the unique constraints of the White House event may set new precedents for fighter negotiations and event promotion in the sport.
