Legendary jockey Frankie Dettori is set to ride his final race this Sunday, February 1st, at the Gavea Racecourse in Brazil, according to the Racing Post. Dettori plans to conclude his riding career on the South American circuit at the 2025 Breeders’ Cup in Del Mar.

In recent months, Dettori achieved victories at San Isidro in Argentina last December and at Maronas in Uruguay earlier this year. Although he was anticipated to compete in the G1 Chile Derby in March, he has since decided not to participate, as reported by the Racing Post.

The 55-year-old Italian jockey is expected to take part in the G1 Grande Premio Estado de Rio de Janeiro— the first leg of the Brazilian Triple Crown contested over one mile on turf— as well as the G1 Grande Premio Enrique Posolo. He is scheduled to ride in these two Grade 1 races plus two additional events, although the final entries are still pending. To accommodate Dettori’s participation, the race schedule has been moved up by a week, according to Racing Post.

Initially, Dettori had planned to retire in 2022 but chose to extend his career in the United States, where he has been based for the past two years, culminating his North American racing chapter at this year’s Breeders’ Cup. Since moving to the U.S. in 2023, Dettori has secured 25 graded stakes wins, including the 2025 Met Mile (G1) and the 2024 Malibu Stakes (G1) aboard Raging Torrent.

Following his final races in Brazil, Dettori will take on a new role as the Global Racing Ambassador for Amo Racing.
