Junior Alvarado had an exceptional day at Gulfstream Park, securing four victories, including graded stakes wins in the Fred W. Hooper (G3), Pegasus World Cup Fillies Turf Invitational (G2), and Inside Information (G2). His first victory of the day occurred in the second race, a maiden special weight event. For his outstanding achievements from January 19th to 25th, Alvarado was named Jockey of the Week by the Horse Racing Experts Committee.
This weekly accolade honors jockeys who have demonstrated remarkable success on the track and are members of the Jockeys Guild, an organization established in 1940 that represents over 1,050 active, retired, and permanently disabled jockeys across the United States.
Alvarado kicked off Pegasus World Cup Day with a win aboard Swing Vought in the second race, trained by the renowned five-time Eclipse Award winner Bill Mott—a promising start to an extraordinary day. In the 5-year-old Fred W. Hooper (G3), Alvarado guided Mott’s Knightsbridge to victory. Knightsbridge, favored with a record of four wins and five losses from eight races, held off main competitor Life and Times, ridden by Jose Lezcano, to finish first by 4 3/4 lengths in 1:35.12 over one mile on the main track.
“We’ve always thought very highly of him,” Alvarado told a Gulfstream spokesperson. “He showed up today and ran a really good race.”
Later, under the guidance of two-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox, Alvarado rode Destino d’Oro to victory in the Pegasus World Cup Fillies Turf Invitational (G2). Starting as a 15-1 long shot, the 4-year-old filly remained near the rear of the 12-horse field but steadily advanced along the outside to score a half-length win in 1:40.33 over 1 1/16 miles on turf.
“We broke down and knew she was probably going to come from off the pace,” Alvarado said. “I couldn’t believe how many horses were underneath me when we changed the lead at three-quarters of a pole and then closed in at five-eighths.”
Alvarado’s fourth win came in the Inside Information (G2) with trainer Bill Mott’s 5-year-old Grand Job. The favorite in an 11-horse field at 2-1 odds, Grand Job took command midway through the turn and cruised to a 2 3/4-length victory, completing seven furlongs in 1:21.41.
“It was a great day,” Alvarado remarked. “I’ve ridden horses that have been very energetic and good. This filly today has been ready for quite some time and was ready today as well. I was just a passenger.”
Gulfstream Park serves as Alvarado’s winter base, where he intends to continue riding throughout the week. Other contenders for Jockey of the Week included Erik Asmussen, who notched two stakes wins at Sam Houston including the Houston Ladies Classic (G3); Manny Franco, victor in the Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1); Tyler Gaffalione, who claimed the Pegasus World Cup (G1) on Skippy Longstocking; and Samuel Marin, who accumulated ten wins this week with five achieved on Saturday alone.
