  • Manchester United need depth in goalkeeping department
  • Emi Martinez is considered one of the best goalkeepers

Manchester United are once again exploring the possibility of signing Emiliano Martinez, with Spanish newspaper Ficajes reporting that the club remain keenly interested in Aston Villa and Argentina’s No. 1.

United had targeted Martinez in last summer’s transfer window, but ultimately opted to sign young Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lamence instead.

Despite the decision, the club’s admiration for Martinez remains.

The Red Devils are currently re-evaluating their goalkeeping department as concerns remain about the depth behind first-choice goalkeeper Lamence.

Altai Vaindir is currently the main back-up, but questions remain within the club as to whether he is fit to play long-term if needed.

United are therefore looking to move up their goalkeeping ranks, with Martinez once again emerging as one of the best options on the shortlist.

Man United remain keen on signing Martinez and could make a formal approach later this year.

The timing could be opportune, as Aston Villa are in a position where they need to comply with financial regulations and raise funds to support their ambitious efforts to strengthen their squad.

As a result, Villa are reportedly willing to sell Martinez for a transfer fee in the region of £40 million, a sum that reflects his status as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

Since joining from Arsenal in 2020, Martinez has been a game-changer at Villa Park.

His commanding presence, leadership and elite shot-stopping ability have helped Villa evolve into one of the Premier League’s most competitive teams.

Martinez continued to excel under Unai Emery and played a key role in Villa’s unexpected rise to the top of the table this season.

On the international stage, Martinez’s heroic performances for the Argentina national team cemented his worldwide reputation.

His defining moment came at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he made a series of spectacular saves, including a vital penalty stop, helping Argentina win their third world title.

His mentality, character and clutch performances under pressure have made him one of the most admired goalkeepers in world football.

For Man United, signing Martinez would represent both experience and quality in one package.

He is used to playing from the back, dominates in the air and is excellent in one-on-one situations.

If Villa are open to negotiations and United are prepared to invest heavily in the position, Martinez could become one of Old Trafford’s most important goalkeeping acquisitions since David de Gea arrived more than a decade ago.
