Solitude Hero Aims to Keep Winning Streak Intact in Swale

Chris Fountukis’ Solitude Dude, who has dominated his first two races by wide margins, aims to showcase his talent once more in Saturday’s $175,000 Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The Yaupon offspring, fresh off victories totaling 17 1/2 lengths, enters the seven-furlong sprint as the 6-5 favorite in a competitive five-horse field of 3-year-olds, which also includes the $250,000 Holy Bull (G3)—a crucial prep race for the $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1) scheduled for March 28 at Gulfstream.

Trainer Safi Joseph Jr. expressed confidence in Solitude Dude’s early performances but remains curious about the colt’s potential over longer distances. The horse won convincingly at six and a half furlongs during his debut at Gulfstream on November 1 and then dominated another race by eight lengths over six furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs on December 6. Joseph noted that Solitude Dude’s intelligence and recent strong workouts make this a great opportunity to step up in competition.

How Solitude Dude fares in the Swale could shape plans for challenging him in longer-distance races, with some uncertainty lingering about his stamina given his sire Yaupon. However, Joseph also highlighted the horse’s strong maternal lineage, from an Into Mischief mare, suggesting ample versatility. Irad Ortiz Jr. will be riding Solitude Dude for the first time in this event.

Joseph also has Hammonds—a son of Charlatan owned by C2 Racing Stable LLC, JRM Stables LLC, Mathis Stables LLC, and Swale’s Ken Reimer—entered. Hammonds concluded his 2-year-old season strongly with back-to-back wins after a modest debut, including a six-furlong maiden special victory at Gulfstream on September 9 and a six-and-a-half furlong Juvenile Sprint on November 22. Joseph acknowledged Hammonds has room for improvement in shaping up but remains optimistic. Edgardo Zayas will ride Hammonds, who is listed at 8-1 on the morning line.

Another contender, Langvad, who placed third behind Solitude Dude in his first race at Tampa Bay, is set to compete with Tyler Gaffalione aboard. Meanwhile, Green, owned by MV Stable and ridden by Desiassett, attempts to rebound after his first loss in a two-turn race—the 1 1/16-mile Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland last October. Trainer Patrick Biancone explained that following that race, Green was rested and has been preparing for this spring campaign. Although not at peak fitness, Green is expected to put in a solid effort in the one-turn Swale sprint. Rated third on the morning line at 4-1, Desiassett opened his career with two straight victories in Gulfstream’s five-furlong maiden special and the six-furlong Proudman Stakes. Biancone confirmed that Green excels in one-turn races rather than at longer, two-turn distances. Junior Alvarado, who recently had a standout performance with four wins at the Pegasus World Cup event, will pilot Green for the first time in the Swale.

WinStar Farm LLC, First Go Racing LLC, and CHC, Inc.’s Class President will make his stakes debut in the Swale after earning his first win on December 27 at Gulfstream. Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, the son of Uncle Mo took a one-turn mile maiden special weight by three-quarters of a length. Hall of Famer John Velazquez is slated to ride Class President, who is the second choice at 5-2 on the morning line.

Epic Summer, representing Swinbank Stables LLC and trained by George Weaver, seeks to rebound from a sixth-place finish in the one-mile Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream on January 3. The gelding by Vekoma previously impressed with a debut win over the Swale favorite Neary by more than three lengths over six and a half furlongs at Aqueduct in late October. Hall of Famers Javier Castellano will be aboard Epic Summer, who is rated 5-1 on the line.

Fan Take:
This upcoming Swale Stakes is shaping up as a pivotal event to watch, as it offers insights into the promising young talent that could define the 3-year-old racing scene, especially with the Florida Derby looming. For horse racing enthusiasts, races like these not only spotlight rising stars but also influence breeding and training strategies that shape the future of the sport.
