Coyle’s Hat Trick Powers Blue Jackets to 4-2 Victory Over Blackhawks

On Friday night, the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2, marking their fourth consecutive win and eighth in their last nine games (8-0-1). Charlie Coyle achieved his second career hat trick, while Mathieu Olivier contributed both a goal and an assist. Coyle assisted on Olivier’s goal, which proved to be the game-winner, giving Columbus a 3-1 lead early in the second period. Coyle had been hot, scoring five goals and totaling nine points over his last three games, and sealed his performance with an empty-net goal in the final minute. He scored the Blue Jackets’ first two goals—one on a power play at the end of the first period and the other early in the second—before Olivier’s goal.

Connor Bedard scored a spectacular wrist shot just before the end of the first period, and later assisted on a Chicago goal by Frank Nazar, who beat Elvis Merzlikins from 25 feet out. Merzlikins and Spencer Knight both stopped 22 shots each in the game. The Blackhawks, struggling offensively, failed to capitalize on two power plays and extended their drought without a power-play goal, now 10 games long, with only one in the past month. Chicago also made roster adjustments before the game, recalling defenseman Sam Lindsell from Rockford and sitting Artyom Levshunov due to recent poor plus/minus ratings.

The Blue Jackets are set to visit St. Louis on Saturday, while the Blackhawks will host San Jose on Monday.

Fan Take: This game highlights the rising star of Connor Bedard, promising exciting developments for Chicago’s future. Meanwhile, Columbus’s continued winning streak signals a potential shift in their performance, energizing fans eager to see how they might challenge playoff expectations down the line—an important reminder of how individual brilliance and team momentum can impact the sport’s narrative.
